You can donate to BHHRS in several ways:
Additionally, donating your time and sharing our mission with others are invaluable ways to help. We are always looking for committed members to join our committees, help with fundraising and events, and spread our online presence via social media. Volunteering at our events, assisting with animal care, or sharing information about our cause significantly contribute to our efforts.
For more details, please refer to the "Support Our Mission" page on our website or send us a message directly. Your generous contributions help us continue our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses in need. Thank you for your support!
At BHHRS, we are dedicated to offering a range of programs that ensure the safety, security, and well-being of equines in need. Our adoption program places rescued horses into lifelong, loving homes through a meticulous and caring process. Through our Big Hoof Intercept Program, we actively rescue horses from auctions, accept owner surrenders, and assist in cruelty cases, providing these animals with the second chance they deserve.
We also offer the Hay and Feed Fund, which supplies necessary hay and feed to rescues and equine owners experiencing hardships, ensuring that no horse goes hungry. Our Blanket Closet Share Program accepts new and gently used blankets to support malnourished and medically frail horses during harsh weather conditions. The Angel Care Fund provides compassionate support for rescued horses and owners facing difficult end-of-life decisions or financial challenges.
In addition to these hands-on programs, we are committed to advocacy and education, working tirelessly to raise awareness about equine welfare issues and promote responsible horse ownership. Our dedicated team of volunteers plays a crucial role in our efforts, assisting with events, fundraising, and animal caretaking to ensure that we can continue making a positive impact on the lives of these incredible animals.
At BHHRS, our mission is to find happy, lifelong homes for our rescues and to advocate for their well-being every step of the way.
No, we are not a bailout. Our rescue horses are occasionally pulled directly from the auctions when dire circumstances such as very seriously ill or injured horses are present. On occasions we are able to assist through owner surrender situations. We also are open to assisting law enforcement agencies or animal cruelty investigations. NO ANIMAL at Big Hoof will ever see a slaughter truck.
No. We at Big Hoof had to take a long hard look at the practices of such businesses. It is our opinion that is also backed by multiple reports that these businesses are a scam. The majority of horses seen in these ploys, would never be shipped. They are a cheaper means for the dealer to make enough money, to purchase the more expensive horses that CAN ship to slaughter. The average bidding for a bailed horse at auction is around $450. Bailout prices are well over that amount. It's a profit driven scheme, and the horses involved suffer. A legitimate rescue, can bid on a horse, provide veterinary care, and feed and adopt out still for less than the inflated prices at a bailout.
There are multiple legitimate sources on the web, that a basic search can uncover. Later on, we will provide an educational page regarding the bail out scam, and how to avoid it.
In short? Absolutely. We will be recruiting for volunteers to assist with events, fundraising, and even animal caretaking. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities, please let us know through our contact page and drop us a message!

"Bailout" and "kill pen" scams are unfortunately common in the horse-trading world. Here's a brief overview: provided by in whole or in part by the ASPCA, as well as the United Horse Council.
Kill pen scams involve horse traders who acquire horses and then market them online as being in immediate danger of being sent to slaughter2. They claim that the only way to save these horses is to pay a "bail" fee to "rescue" them2. However, these operations often misrepresent the horses' conditions and create artificial deadlines to pressure potential buyers into paying high fees.
These scams not only exploit the emotions of well-meaning horse lovers but also endanger the horses involved. Horses may be exposed to diseases, injuries, and poor conditions throughout the process. Many of the horses leave the lots, in worse shape than when they arrived.
To genuinely help horses, consider adopting from reputable rescue organizations, supporting legislation to end horse slaughter, and advocating for better animal welfare practices.
